The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) sent letters to 1460 about motorists warning them that the deadline for the cancellation of their licenses had been postponed indefinitely.
The letter from Janet Dolan, director of the department, states:
"The Department of Transportation was notified last May 29, 2009 that his driver's privilege would be canceled on June 19, 2009 at 12:01 am if you did not resolve a discrepancy with your Social Security number. The Department of Transportation is postponing the date of cancellation.
When establishing a new date, the Department will send a notice of cancellation Extra requirements to prevent the cancellation, and a new effective date. "
PennDOT decided to postpone the deadline "to give more time to submit documents to the people" according to his spokeswoman Danielle Klinger.
In a letter to PennDOT on Monday the local chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the Union of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had urged a delay of 60 days of the deadline for cancellation of the licenses.
They argued that the documentation requirements did not include some categories of legal immigrants, for example those who do not qualify for Social Security card.
They requested more time because, they say, many people did not receive the letters until the second week of June, a fact which gave them less than two weeks to file the necessary documents to keep his license current, thus "violating his right to due process.
Of the 2,100 people who received the original letters of termination, approximately 640 have already submitted the documents required by PennDOT offices, according to Klinger.
The department found a total of 45,000 drivers conflicting Social Security numbers in a crawl started in 2007. Many of them were due to human errors and name changes.
